ACTIVELY PROTECTING WOMEN AND GIRLS

ALLOWING MIRA TO LIVE

This is Mira. She could also be called Devi, Lalita or Priya but most importantly, she was lucky enough to live. Unfortunately, however, being allowed to grow up is anything but a given for Indian girls. In India, female babies are often aborted, killed after birth or neglected to such an extent that they are unable to survive. In cultural and religious terms, girls are still considered to be the lesser sex. The high dowry that has to be paid to the groom’s parents if a girl marries frequently drives families into financial ruin. The Indian government has introduced a multitude of measures to protect girls, for example a ban on doctors being able to pre-determine the sex of a baby before birth, baby hatches in which desperate parents can anonymously leave their newborn girls and financial support for mothers until their daughters reach the age of 18. Furthermore, a large number of NGO initiatives and support centres act as ports of call for women and girls and provide them with educational support, legal advice and assistance in their everyday lives. AS Ultrasound wants to play its part in providing pregnant women with access to good medical care and ensuring that young girls are able to survive.

OUR WORK IS OUR CALLING

THE CHALLENGE

Many women living in third-world countries do not have sufficient access to medical care, even when pregnant. As a result, they are sometimes unable to feel a connection with their unborn baby. Although it is forbidden, hundreds of thousands of female foetuses are selectively aborted every year.

THE TASK

AS Ultrasound wants to use ultrasound diagnostics to show women in third-world countries just how special and unique the unborn life inside them really is. We believe in the power of visualisation. Seeing their own child on the ultrasound monitor and hearing its little heartbeat for the very first time is an extremely special moment for all parents-to-be. Even when their pregnancy is still ‘invisible’ on the outside, ultrasounds give parents the early opportunity to form a special connection with their child. Medical imaging helps to provide reliable care and support for pregnant women and strengthens their bond with their unborn baby, be it a girl or a boy. AS Ultrasound hopes to use ultrasound diagnostics to combat the abortion rate and the killing of newborn babies.

THE IMPLEMENTATION

AS Ultrasound exports new and refurbished ultrasound devices and medical supplies for human medicine to third-world countries. In Germany, the supply of equipment in the field of ultrasound diagnostics exceeds the demand, while in India, not enough systems are being used to guarantee comprehensive medical care and professional ultrasound diagnostics throughout the country. AS Ultrasound only distributes high-quality new or refurbished devices that are fully functioning.
